More than a blanket, the Rooted Journey Blanket is a visual representation of the people, places, experiences, losses, and memories that shape who we become.
The design follows one complete tree from the mountains and branches above to the roots, anchor, and koi below. Nothing is cropped away because every part of the tree belongs to the story.
Why the tree is part of Why I Am the Way I Am
The tree was created as a visual summary of my memoir, Why I Am the Way I Am.
The book is about understanding where I came from and recognizing the people and experiences that made me who I am. The tree represents that same idea.
The roots are family, loss, memories, and the experiences that formed my foundation. The tree itself represents growth through different seasons of life — including the difficult ones.
The mountains represent adventure, getting outside my comfort zone, and the challenges I’ve learned to keep moving through.
The anchor, woven directly into the roots, represents my Pop — grounding, stability, strength, and the part of my foundation that remains even after loss.
The koi represents my cousin Larry and carries the meaning of memory, transformation, and resilience.
Together, the artwork became a kind of map of my life — a way of showing everything that shaped me without needing to explain it all in words.
That is why the tree belongs with the book, and why it became the centerpiece of this blanket.
